Obama made the US Judicial History

Now a day’s U.S is going to settle down their issues whether they are facing economically, socially or from any other source but the decision made by the President Obama he has become the first President who decided to confirm Sotomayor first Supreme Court nominee. She’ll be sworn in tomorrow as the Supreme Court’s 111th justice, its third woman and the first nominee by a Democrat in 15 years. Sotomayor also becomes the court’s first Hispanic justice. The 55-year-old New Yorker watched the vote unfold on big-screen televisions in a conference room overflowing with judges and courthouse personnel. Sotomayor has worked in the building for years, first as a district judge and then on a federal appeals court.

Sonia Sotomayor

As the gathering broke up, a beaming Sotomayor brushed off questions from reporters, telling them, “I’m going to be with my friends.” Sotomayor was born to Puerto Rican parents, raised in a South Bronx housing project and educated in the Ivy League before rising to the highest legal echelons.

A majority of republicans lined up against her, arguing she’d bring personal bias and a liberal agenda to the bench. But Democrats praised her as an extremely qualified mainstream moderate and touted her elevation to the court as a milestone in the nation’s journey toward greater equality and a reaffirmation of the American dream.

Obama praised the Senate’s vote as “breaking another barrier and moving us yet another step closer to a more perfect union. “Before the vote, Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the judiciary committee chairman, called it one for the ages. “Years from now … we will remember this time when we crossed paths with the quintessentially American journey of Sonia Sotomayor,” he said.

Just before the vote, Robert Menendez, the Senate’s lone Hispanic Democrat, said, “History awaits, and so does an anxious Hispanic community in this country.” Nine republicans joined majority democrats and the Senate’s two independents to support Sotomayor’s confirmation. Those who voted in favour included the chamber’s lone Hispanic Republican, retiring Senator Mel Martinez. Now we will have to so see carefully that how effective will be this Decision!

Sotomayor replaces retiring Justice David Souter; a liberal named by a Republican president, and is not expected to alter the court’s ideological split.  Read more…
